A nineteenth-century American edition of The Young Mechanic, Containing Directions for the Use of All Kinds of Tools, And for the Construction of Steam Engines and Mechanical Models, Including The Art of Turning in Wood and Metal by James Lukin (identified only as ‘The Author of ’The Lathe and Its Uses,’ ‘The Amateur Mechanic’s Workshop,’ &c.‘). Published circa 1872 by G. P. Putnam’s Sons, this guidebook for boys features extensive instruction on carpentry and other mechanical topics; chapter titles include ‘Mortice and Tenon Jointing’, ‘Dovetailing and Mitring’ and ‘How to Make a Steam-Engine’. The book is bound in green cloth-covered boards with a gilt front cover illustration of a young man planing wood at a workbench.
