An antique oil portrait painting on canvas. This unsigned painting depicts a gentleman, believed to be Thomas D. Anderson, formal Consul of Tunis, in a black and white suit seated in a chair clutching a book. The work is believed to be by a European artist named West and painted in Italy. The painting is presented in a gold leaf gesso and wood frame. There is a handwritten label to the verso of the stretcher. A wire is present to the verso for hanging purposes.
Condition
- signs of inpainting, particularly notable to upper right corner of face; minor crackle across surface of piece; long hairline fracture to paint runs horizontally across the middle of the piece due to folded storage from Italy to the U.S.; extensive wear to the outer frame; the work was reportedly cleaned during the 1950s.
