Early 19th-Century Oil Portrait on Canvas of Woman After Jean-Marc Nattier

Item Details

An oil portrait on canvas of woman dated to the early 19th-century after a work by Jean-Marc Nattier (1685-1766). This painting depicts a woman with fashionably grey hair and flushed cheeks reclining on a vase in a darkened landscape. She wears a white dress with a vibrant blue garment cascading downwards mimicking the water spilling from the vase. Floral elements in pink and orange hues are present in the woman’s lap, garment, and hair. This work is rendered in a Neoclassical style with its use of light in the background and on the figure as well as crisp definition of forms. This piece appears unsigned, however, a yellow mark is present to the lower right. This work is presented without glass in a museum frame with gilding and acanthus leaf and shell cartouche moulding present to each corner. Hanging hardware is present to the verso.
