An antique terrestrial globe by W. & A.K. Johnston Ltd., circa early 20th century. The eighteen-inch globe is comprised of printed gores applied to a plaster sphere surrounded by a calibrated, brass meridian. It has metal hour circles at the north and south poles and there is a cartouche with a coat of arms reading ‘18 Inch / Terrestrial Globe / by / W. & A.K. Johnston, / Limited / Geographers, Engravers, & Printers, / Edinburgh and London’. In addition to depicting states and countries in a variety of shades and colors, the globe is printed with an Analemma table in the Pacific. The meridian bracket is stamped ‘PAT APR. 2 1908’.
Condition
- some fading/discolored spots to paper gores; scattered small abrasions/marks; larger abrasion below Greenland and another in the South Pacific Ocean, both of which have cracks/chips and losses revealing globe lining; tarnishing to metal components; no stand.
