Antique Model 1852 Naval Officer's Sword by M.C. Lilley with Scabbard

Item Details

An antique Model 1852 US Naval Officer’s sword with scabbard. This sword was constructed by M.C. Lilley & Co. of Columbus, Ohio, between 1872 and 1882 for use by a US Navy officer. The blade is straight and slim, with a broad fuller and false edge; etchings on the blade show ivy patterns and the letters ‘USN’, with M.C. Lilley’s maker’s mark at the ricasso. The white ray skin grip is wrapped by twisted brass wire, and the Phrygian cap pommel leads to a D-shaped guard and oval pierced counterguard with the letters ‘USN’ set amid the acorn and leaf design and terminating in a forward-swept dolphin-head finial. This sword is presented in its original black leather scabbard with gilt brass throat, suspender, and chape.

Condition

- slight tarnish to the blade; slight separation of grip from crossguard; discoloration to brass elements; scratches, cracking, and some wear-through to the scabbard; evidence of repair to scabbard via modern screws.
