An oil painting on board of a Giverny landscape by well-listed American artist John Leslie Breck (1860-1899). Rendered with loose brushstrokes and dabs of pigment, this Impressionist work features a large pond surrounded by a lush landscape with leafy trees and a pavilion structure along the left bank. The painting is signed to the lower right. It is presented in a decorative gold-tone wood frame. ‘Giverny’ is handwritten to the board verso. For a similar work by Breck titled Creek in Dense Forest that was purchased from the same estate, please see Stuart Holman Auctioneer auction record on May 1st, 2004, auction lot #715.

Born in Hong Kong and raised in New England, John Breck attended the Munich Royal Academy and the Academie Julian where he developed an Impressionist style. Having spent time in Giverny, he came to know Claude Monet and became romantically involved with his stepdaughter Blanche Hoschede-Monet. He is considered one of the American heirs of Impressionist painting in the late 19th century and helped popularize the movement in the Boston area. In addition to the Paris Salons of the late 19th century, his work was also featured at the 1889 Paris Exposition Universelle. Breck’s work has been collected by numerous institutions including the Musée d’Art Américain Giverny, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, and the Carnegie Museum of Art, among others.
