An oil painting on canvas board of an Impressionist landscape by well-listed New England-based artist J. Alden Weir (1852-1919), created in 1916. This peaceful summer landscape features a small-town church and some houses surrounded by lush green trees with a pond in the foreground. Picturing a typical genre painted by the artist, the work is portrayed in the artist’s signature style of vibrant colors, loose brushstrokes, and suppressed detail. The composition is signed and dated to the lower right ‘J.W. ’16’. It is presented in a decorative gilt wood frame. A label from CAG Framing and Restoration is present to the verso.
American Impressionist painter Julian Alden Weir studied at the National Academy of Design and the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. While in Europe, he developed relationships with several famed artists such as his teacher Jean-Léon Gérôme (1824-1904) and James McNeill Whistler (1834-1903) who was taught by Weir’s father Robert. Weir became known for his Impressionist landscapes and figural compositions that ranged from vibrantly colorful paintings to subdued Tonalist compositions. Significantly, Weir was among the founding members of the Ten American Painters, a group of American artists formed in 1898 which included Frank W. Benson, Thomas Wilmer Dewing, Childe Hassam, Willard Leroy Metcalf, Robert Reid, Edward Simmons, Edmund C. Tarbell, Joseph DeCamp, and John Henry Twachtman (later replaced by William Merritt Chase after his death). His work has been collected by numerous renowned art institutions including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, and the Wadsworth Atheneum, among others.
