An oil painting on canvas of a mountainous pastoral landscape by listed American artist and architect John Stewart Barney (c. 1869-1925). This work features two lone farmers leading a large herd of sheep down a dirt road. The minuscule sheep and herders are dwarfed by the surrounding hilly green landscape populated with trees and mountain peaks faintly visible in the far distance. The composition is signed in red paint to the lower right. It is presented in an Arts & Crafts style Newcomb-Macklin gilt and gesso frame with foliate motifs in the corners. A short bio of the artist from Charleston Renaissance Gallery is present to the verso.

Born in Virginia, J. Stewart Barney was an architect and painter who studied at Columbia University and the École des Beaux-Arts. He designed many buildings in Virginia and New York City, and is known for his paintings of scenic mountainous landscapes.
