An oil painting on canvas titled The Old Mill Stream by well-listed American artist Jess Hobby (1871-1938). Portrayed with large loose brushstrokes and vibrant colors, this impressionistic work features two boys fishing in a marshy pond surrounded by autumnal trees and foliage. The painting is signed ‘Jess Hobby’ in black paint to the lower right. It is presented in a decorative Art Nouveau style gilt and gesso frame with abstract foliate motifs at the corners. A descriptive label form The All-Illinois Society of the Fine Arts, Inc. is present to the verso, indicating that the painting was exhibited at the Society’s Eighth Annual Exhibition.
Born in Cooperstown, New York, Jess Hobby studied at the H.B. Howley Art School. He is especially known for his impressionistic landscape paintings and floral still lifes. Later in life, he settled in Illinois with his wife and exhibited his work at several art institutions including the All-Illinois Society of the Fine Arts; the Austin, Oak Park, and River Forest Art League; and Oak Park’s Blackstone Art Galleries, among others.
