Martin Rettig Original Oil on Canvas Board Floral Still Life

An original signed oil painting on canvas board well-listed painter and Rookwood Pottery decorator Martin Rettig (Cincinnati; 1869 – 1956). The painting depicts a round ceramic vessel holding a bouquet of pink and white flowers with yellow centers. The flowers are set against a brown background. The painting is signed in dark brown to the lower right. It is presented in a wooden frame with cast surface texture, gold tone finish, and a hanging wire attached to the verso. Biographical information about the artist is attached to the piece’s verso.

Rettig studied with prolific painter Frank Duveneck and shared a studio space with Henry Farny in his early painting career, and was president of the Cincinnati Art Club from 1918 – 1920.

Condition

- board does not fit properly in frame, creating gaps at edges. A few small scratches and scuffs mark the piece’s surface. Light scratching, cracking, and chipping across frame.
