Wooden Frame

A unique antique hand-colored silver gelatin photograph. The photograph was taken of an original Japanese woodblock print. It depicts a Japanese coastline where soldiers with flags and small boats line the water’s edge in a formal greeting. Many large boats approach the coast. The photograph of the original print has been accented with muted watercolors. Several Japanese characters are scattered across the scene, seemingly labeling various boats and landmarks. Five lines of characters are visible to the upper left. The piece is matted in black and presented behind glass in a wooden frame with black and gold tone textured finishes and a sawtooth hanger.

Condition

- significant creasing across piece. A band of discoloration marks the right edge. Paper is slightly yellowed with age. Silver shadowing across photograph. Light scratching and wear to frame.
