Frederick J. Kiesler Ink Sketches of Set Designs for Pirandello's "Henry IV"

A set of six ink sketches of set designs by Frederick J. Kiesler for Henry IV by Luigi Pirandello. Several of the sketches depict a set with a curved wall either plain or with arches and others a figure on a thrown. One sketch is a side elevation with dimensions noted. Most have some descriptive notation and all but one are signed with initials. Each is mounted under glass in a black wooden frame that is wired for hanging.

Frederick John Kiesler was an architect, theater designer, artist and sculptor and associated with the Surrealist movement. He was educated in Europe and began creating set designs in Berlin and Vienna in the 1920s. He emigrated to New York in 1926 and continued designing sets for theater and film and was the director of Columbia University’s Laboratory for Design Correlation in the Architecture Department.

Condition

- discoloration to all six drawings; scratches and wear to the frames; discoloration and tears to the backing paper of each.
