Antique Chinese Export Porcelain Platter
Item Details
An antique Chinese export porcelain platter. The platter features a well-painted floral pattern to the oval form in pink, red, and purple with a thin pink and green border and gilded trefoils to the rim. The orange peel glaze is indicative of late eighteenth to early nineteenth century production and the lack of glazing and combed underside created a non-slip surface suggesting the use of the dish for serving meat. It is unmarked as was typical for these pieces from this period. ‘Lowestoft’ has been later added to the underside as many of these pieces came into the port at Lowestoft in England, and for a period were erroneously referred as Lowestoft. To further add confusion, a factory operating that port city made some pieces that resembled Chinese but were made in a soft paste porcelain body.
Condition
- some discoloration; surface scratches; marks and stains to undersides.
