WWII Mark IV Aircraft Octant Navigation Tool

A World War II era Mark IV aircraft octant navigation tool. This black painted metal tool was affixed to aircraft in World War II to aid in navigation; by clipping a stopwatch into the brace on the side, a pilot could measure the position of stars and the sun in order to determine current position. This piece is presented in its original olive finished wooden box, with a plaque to the front reading ‘Aircraft Octant, Mark IV, Bu. of Aero. U.S. Navy’, along with serial numbers, and ‘Pioneer Instrument, Division of Bendix Aviation Corporation, Bendix, New Jersey, U.S.A.’

Condition

- some scratching and chipping of equipment box; leather of octant falling apart and sloughing off; wear to finish; loss to eyepiece; may be incomplete; untested
