Circa 1829 Custom Folio Publication "The Psalms of David"

Item Details

A circa 1829 custom folio publication titled The Psalms of David, printed on hand laid paper with deckled edges and boards in red marbleized paper. The frontispiece in red old english font state; Here begins The Psalms of David now newly imprinted by John Henry Nash for his friends and notably for his Jewish friends of San Fransisco. This is a fitting occasion for a tribute to the men and women of San Fransisco who proudly claim racial connection with the royal singer of Israel. Our city acclaims them for their distinguished patronage of music, art and letters, no less than for their charitable and philanthropic generosity. Let me add my individual acknowledgment for t Jews of San Fransisco I owe a debt of friendship that can never be fully discharged. About this Gothic printing of the Psalms it will doubtless be said by critics that it is hard to read. I agree; the book has been done with the hope that it will prove to be a typographical picture. Anno Domini MDCCCCXXIX. Each page is printed with red titles and wide arabesque borders.
John Henry Nash was born in Ontario, Canada in 1871. He was an apprentice in the shop of James Murray in Toronto before moving to San Francisco in 1895 where he eventually opened his own shop producing books, pamphlets and custom publications.
