Antique Hand-Knotted Persian Serab Camel Hair Area Rug

An antique Persian Serab area rug. This gorgeous wool and camel hair tribal rug is hand-knotted in an abrashed palette of tan, madder red, deep midnight-blue, and sapphire. It begins dramatically with a stepped diamond medallion grounded in red and filled with boteh, with double pendants at top and bottom. The medallion floats in the center of a notched tan lozenge, which is patterned with tan-on-tan hooked medallions. The lozenge, in turn, rests on a midnight-blue field, which features a stylized herati pattern made distinctive by numerous animal figures, boteh, and flower heads tucked into the spaces between the herati palmettes and diamonds. Framing the field are four borders. These include a stylized herati main border over sapphire and a wide outer guard border in tan. Selvedges are overcast, with some areas of incidental weft fringe. Ends finish with mesh and incidental wool warp fringe. The rug is unlabeled.
