A leather pyrography portrait of Hinmatóowyalahtq̓it, the Nez Perce chief, by artist H.N. Spence. This piece depicts the figure, known also by the name Chief Joseph, with a serious expression on his face, beaded cords encircling his neck. To one side of his face is text reading ‘The earth and myself are of one mind. The measure of the land and the measure of our bodies are the same’ along with the subject’s name spelled as ‘Heinmot Tooyalaket, Chief Joseph of the Nez Percés’ and the artist’s signature. The leather is stretched over a wooden panel with string to its verso for hanging,
