A watercolor and gouache painting on paper titled Boat House No. 3 by well-listed California-based artist Rex Brandt (American; 1914 – 2000), created in 1968. The work features a large boat house encircled by sailboats of various sizes, portrayed with large expressive brushstrokes. To the bottom right, the painting is titled, signed, and specifically dated ‘2-29-68’ in graphite. The work is presented under glass and housed in a silver-tone wood frame with a large canvas fillet. A stamp from Challis Galleries is present to the verso.

Known internationally for his Cubist style watercolors of Southern California coastal scenes and landscapes, Rex Brandt is celebrated as a leader of California artists working in the mid 20th century. He received his formal art training at the Chouinard Art Institute as a teenager and, for his secondary education, at the University of California, Berkeley, studying under Hans Hoffman and John Haley. In 1939, he was chosen as a premier California watercolorist to exhibit his work in the New York World’s Fair art exhibition American Art Today. In the late 1930s, he also served as the director of the WPA for Riverside and San Bernardino in California, helping him gain national recognition. Brandt’s work has been represented by numerous institutions including the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Laguna Art Museum, and the Chaffey Community Museum of Art, among others.

- some scratches and nicks to the frame; some smudges and stains to canvas fillet; crease in a grid like pattern throughout the work; to the verso, rips and tears to protective backing.
