Frank Henry Shapleigh Oil Painting on Canvas Landscape

Item Details

Frank Henry Shapleigh (American, 1842-1906)
Untitled, 1864
Oil painting on canvas
Signed and dated to lower left; inscribed to verso
18’ W x 14’ H

An oil painting on canvas New England landscape scene by Frank Henry Shapleigh (American, 1842-1906), executed in 1864. A lone, horse-mounted figure rides along a narrow path. The verdant, open air landscape stretches on with an open field flanked by a stone wall to one side and a dense forest in the distance. Billowing clouds float calmly above in the pale blue sky. Signed and dated to lower left. A faint inscription to the verso from Shapleigh identifies the location of the landscape, however is illegible. The work is presented in a gilt and gesso wood frame having reeded cove moulding and acanthus leaves to the corners.

Frank Henry Shapleigh was a Boston raised painter who studied painting at the Lowell Institute of Drawing. He also studied in the studio of Emile Lambinet (1815-1877) after the Civil War. Known for his landscape paintings, he worked throughout New England as well as in California and Florida for a period of time. He was artist-in-residence at the Crawford House in New Hampshire and in the winter at the Ponce de Leon Hotel in St. Augustine.
