An oil painting on canvas of a marine scene by listed American artist Charles Dyer Shed (1818-1893). This work features an expansive seascape populated with various ships and boats scattered throughout the scene; a vast cloudy sky hovers above. The painting is signed ‘C.D. Shed’ to the lower right. The composition is presented in a gold-tone wood frame. Handwriting is present to the frame verso, some of which reads ‘Sanborn Vail & Co’.
Born in Boston, Charles Shed settled in San Francisco during the Gold Rush in 1849. He is known for his landscape paintings of northern California and marine scenes centered around the San Francisco Bay area. His works have been collected and exhibited by several institutions including the Oakland Museum, the Santa Cruz City Museum, and the San Francisco Art Association, among others.

- craquelure throughout painting; dirt and dust collected throughout canvas and framework; some stains scattered throughout painting, especially visible near central right edge and upper left area; discoloration throughout painting; some wear in frame includes scratches, stains, and finish loss scattered throughout.
