A lithograph on paper of a figural scene titled Brief by listed artist Joseph Hirsch (American, 1910 – 1981), created circa 1946. The work depicts a pair of male figures, one reading over the other man’s shoulder who’s seated in a chair. The print is signed in graphite by the artist to the lower right margin. It is housed in a wood frame under acrylic glass and paper matting.
Joseph Hirsch began his art training at the Pennsylvania Museum School of Industrial Art; he later continued his studies with George Luks then Henry Hensche. He was also awarded the Woolley Fellowship that allowed him to study a year in Paris. Known for his social realist content, military scenes, and modernist figural scenes, Hirsch’s murals adorn several public buildings in Philadelphia. His work has been collected by numerous institutions including the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and the Corcoran Gallery, among others.
