Miniature Liberian Dan Tribe Deangle Ma Go Mask

Item Details

A miniature Liberian Dan tribe deangle – form ‘Ma Go’ mask. These pieces, known as ‘small head’ masks served as ‘passports’ of a sort, being a miniature copy of an important mask in the owner’s village or family. Masks of this sort were carried or worn on the belt when leaving the village for an extended period of time to maintain contact with the important spirit mask at home. The mask presented here is carved from a single piece of wood, an oval face, small slits for eyes with eyebrow detail, and a slightly protruding forehead. The lips of the face are the most clearly exaggerated detail of the mask. Likely post – World War Two, circa 1950-1960.
