Hand-Knotted Persian "Mahal" Wool Area Rug
Item Details
A large hand-knotted Persian Mahal wool area rug. The rug has been worked in a palette which includes shades of red, peach, coral, salmon, blue-gray, Delft blue, sky blue, ivory, sand, wine, and black. The madder field has been infilled with a nearly symmetrical design which includes arabesques, scrolling leaves, herati motifs, flowers, and palmettes. The spandrels are separated from the field by medahil designs. The compound borders include floral and carnation and meander guard borders flanking the primary border which features herati motifs with lanceolate leaves. The selvedges are overcast and there is short cotton fringe at each end. Tagged to the reverse.
