The composition is rendered with a primarily pastel color palette, with objects reinforced with outlines. The painting is presented in a white wooden frame with a handwritten title and hanging wire found to the verso.
David Walker was an American artist who was most prolific during the 1970s and early 1980s. He was inspired by the German Expressionist movement and artists such as Kathe Kollwitz (1867 – 1945). Like many Expressionists, Walker focused on “fringe” subjects outside of mainstream culture. Keeping a sketchbook with him at all times, Walker was drawn to capturing the melancholy, isolation, and suffering of New York City life. Drawing and painting daily, Walker left over 300 works of art upon his death in the late 1980s.
