David Walker 1985 Oil Painting on Canvas of Stretching Figures

Item Details

A 1985 oil painting on canvas by American artist David Walker. The work depicts a group of abstract female nude figures stretching against a background of mottled multicolored pastel hues. The piece is signed and dated in black paint to the lower right, and additionally dated in ink to the canvas verso. It is presented unframed on stretched canvas.

David Walker was an American artist who was most prolific during the 1970s and early 1980s. He was inspired by the German Expressionist movement and artists such as Kathe Kollwitz (1867 – 1945). Like many Expressionists, Walker focused on “fringe” subjects outside of mainstream culture. Keeping a sketchbook with him at all times, Walker was drawn to capturing the melancholy, isolation, and suffering of New York City life. Drawing and painting daily, Walker left over 300 works of art upon his death in the late 1980s.
