1889 Panama Canal French Bankrupt Bond
Item Details
An 1889 French Panama Canal bankrupt bond which features red lettering and a variety of stamps on a cream tone ground and is a stock certificate which was offered by the Canal Interoceanique de Panama Company and according to a stamp dated 1889 to the front, gave the purchasers a priority interest in the event of liquidation. The French had worked on the canal project since 1880 and attempted to organize an international effort behind the project with the issuance of these bonds. The project was not completed by the French and in 1904 the United States purchased the rights and properties of the French Canal Company in order to complete the project. The piece is presented double matted, under glass in a gold tone wooden frame with a window cut to the verso to read the back of the piece and with a wire for hanging.
