Attributed to David Walker Oil Painting on Canvas "Rear View of Male Torso"

Item Details

An oil painting on canvas attributed to artist David Walker (c. 1950- c. 1980), titled Rear View of Male Torso. This Abstract Expressionist style painting depicts a muscular, nude figure posed from the rear, standing with arms crossed while submerged in a cylindrical pedestal. This rests on a pastel toned checkered ground against a toned background. The unsigned painting is placed in a white wooden frame with hanging wire and handwritten information to the verso, including a date of 1980.

David Walker was an American artist who was most prolific during the 1970s and early 1980s. He was inspired by the German Expressionist movement and artists such as Kathe Kollwitz (1867 – 1945). Like many Expressionists, Walker focused on “fringe” subjects outside of mainstream culture. Keeping a sketchbook with him at all times, Walker was drawn to capturing the melancholy, isolation, and suffering of New York City life. Drawing and painting daily, Walker left over 300 works of art upon his death in the late 1980s.
