Antique Alloy Metal Mortar

An antique alloy metal mortar. The cylindrical container has three incised bands at the top and a series of vertical flanges with small returns on the sides. It is consistent with the style of metal-based mortars produced in the Mediterranean basin prior to 1700. The flanges may have been used as handles to steady the mortar while it was being used. Unmarked.
