David Walker Oil Painting on Canvas "Shell Painting"

Item Details

An oil painting on canvas titled Shell Painting by artist David Walker (c. 1950 – c. 1980). This Abstract Expressionist style painting depicts a scalloped seashell juxtaposed with bold, loose shapes rendered in a palette of muted hues. It is signed and dated ‘79’ by hand to the lower right corner. The painting is presented in a floating frame without hanging hardware. Inscribed by hand to the verso is the title and date.

David Walker was an American artist who was most prolific during the 1970s and early 1980s. He was inspired by the German Expressionist movement and artists such as Kathe Kollwitz (1867 – 1945). Like many Expressionists, Walker focused on “fringe” subjects outside of mainstream culture. Keeping a sketchbook with him at all times, Walker was drawn to capturing the melancholy, isolation, and suffering of New York City life. Drawing and painting daily, Walker left over 300 works of art upon his death in the late 1980s.
