A pair of Neoclassical style sterling silver salt cellars with blue glass liners from 1775 by Hester Bateman of London, England 1760-1790. Bateman was one of the first female silversmiths, taking over her husband’s business upon his death, and running it for thirty years. She is widely considered to be one of the finest English silversmiths of the 18th century and is best known for producing quality silver items in the Neoclassical style. The cellars typify her style each featuring a circular well with anthemion patterned openwork sides, an engraved griffin accent, and feather edge rim. The cellars rest on ball and claw feet and are stamped to the underside with the lion passant for sterling, a crowned leopard’s head for London, and a Gothic ‘u’ date mark for 1775 and the maker’s mark for Hester Bateman.
