Chinese Guardian Lion Figure Roof Tile

A ceramic Chinese lion guardian figure seated on a curved roof tile. These statue tiles depicting various mythical creatures, an element of Chinese temple and palace architecture for centuries, are generally placed on the roof ridge or near the distal corner of the overhanging eaves, often in groups standing attendance to a greater guardian figure. This four-legged, grinning figure is molded in high relief, finished in a glossy honey amber glaze. No maker’s mark identified.

- some crazing of glaze; appears to have never been adhered to a roof
