1877 "Passion Cross" Catholic Shadowbox Diorama by Herbert Constable

An antique Catholic Passion Cross religious diorama in a shadowbox frame, made in 1877 by Herbert Constable of Boston, labeled ‘Thy Kingdom Come, 100 Days Indulgence Each Time (Pius IX, 14th June 1877)’ to the front. The diorama features a carved wooden crucifix with gold tone Christ figure to the center; the piece is set against an engraving on paper depicting Mary and John standing at the foot of the cross. The work includes an assortment of silver tone charms that represent the Instruments of the Passion including the scourge, the ladder, the seamless garment and others. The work is lined in taupe fabric with floral embellishments and presented under glass in a brown wooden frame with moulded foliate motifs throughout. The frame verso includes a hanging wire, as well as a sheet with information about The Passion Cross and its symbolism.

- to Fair; some yellowing, foxing and discoloration to piece with age; tarnish and discoloration to some metal pieces; surface wear with small scuffs and chips to frame; dust and accretion present; heavy wear and discoloration to verso and backing paper; exposed screw to verso at lower edge.
