A limited edition serigraph with diamond dust on Lenox Museum Board titled Santa Claus, from the Myths series by American Pop artist Andy Warhol (1928-1987), created in 1981. This work features a bust portrait of Santa Claus painted from a live model and is rendered with detailed linework embellished with diamond dust. The print is signed in graphite to the lower right corner along with the edition number 156 out of 200. It was published by Ronald Feldman Fine Arts, Inc. and is included in the Catalogue Raisonné Andy Warhol Prints: A Catalogue Raisonné 1962 – 1987 by Frayda Feldman and Claudia Defendi; page 122; figure 11.266. The composition is presented under UV conservation glass, and housed in a gold-tone wood frame with a red painted wood fillet, a gold-tone fillet, and a linen wood liner. There is a framer’s and publisher’s label attached to the verso, and the work is accompanied by a certificate of authentication.
Warhol’s Myths series is a collection of ten serigraphs featuring well-known figures, allegorical stories, celebrities, and folklore scenes created in 1981. In this series, Warhol depicted popular American imagery of the 20th century and portrayed them in his idiosyncratic style to highlight the relationship between advertisement, artistic expression, and popular culture.
Andy Warhol, born Andrew Warhola Jr., was a prominent figure in the Pop art movement. His fascination with celebrity culture and status is most evident through his silkscreens of musicians, athletes, actors, and politicians. His portraits are iconic and helped to create Warhol as a celebrity artist. While he is most famous for his silkscreens, his career spans a variety of media including, painting, printmaking, photography, sculpture, film, and music.
