Photgravure Military Certificate After Edwin Blashfield

A vintage photogravure military certificate on paper after American muralist Edwin Blashfield (1848-1936). This certificate depicts a standing female figure holding a sword over the shoulder of a kneeling soldier and the American flag waving in the background. It is inscribed to the upper section ‘Columbia gives to her son the Accolade of the New Chivalry of Humanity’ and to the lower section ‘served with honor in the World War and was wounded in action’ along with a personalized line with the name of a soldier. These certificates were used in World War I for sick and wounded veterans. It is signed in-plate by President Woodrow Wilson to the lower right corner and is presented framed under glass with a cord for hanging in verso.

- print has water damage; warping; foxing; frame has surface wear consistent with age; wear to edges and corners.
