Women's Chinese Manchu Qing Dynasty Period Hand Embroidered Silk Surcoat

A women’s Chinese Manchu hand embroidered silk surcoat dating to the period of the Qing Dynasty. The surcoat is in red silk with blue and ivory silk trim on the front with loop closures, blue silk sleeve bands and hemline. The surcoat has hand embroidery and couching with red stitching. It has a multicolored floral motif embroidered throughout with silk and metal thread embroidery depicting five-clawed dragons chasing the flaming pearl symbolizing the emperor with symbols including flames, mountains, waves, the sun, cranes, tigers, monkeys, elephants and lions. It has a Greek key pattern on the hemline, and is lined in a woven fabric with Chinese characters in black.

- considering the age; loose threads, material is very worn, silk separating in places throughout the garment, discoloration throughout, color transfer on cream panels to front
