1971 Limited Edition Spode Commemorative Imperial Persian Plates

Item Details

A pair of 1971 limited edition Imperial Persian commemorative porcelain plates by Spode. Each features the imperial standard of the Pahlavi dynasty, the last in Iranian history. A pair of lions, rampant regardant, guard the feathered crown with a sword in their paw. They perch on a band inscribed with the imperial motto: ‘Justice He bids me do, as He will judge me.’ Teal, the official color of Persian royalty, features prominently in the polychrome design. The banded rim is accented with rows of scalloped gilt filigree, reminiscent of ancient Achaemenid jewelry. The plate is inscribed in Arabic and English to the verso, indicating production with permission from the shahanshah, ruler until the Iranian Revolution in 1979. One plate also bears a label to the base: ‘From the Carole Stupell Collection.’
