Signed Postmodern Edward S. Eberle Porcelain Vase

Item Details

A signed, hand thrown porcelain vase by listed artist Edward S. Eberle, Flora and Fauna. The simple vase has straight, tall sides, showing his characteristic throwing rings on the interior. The vase shows the artist’s postmodern approach to decoration, using black washes and underglazes in a chaotic, gestural style, with some sgraffito and incising to the surface. The vase is slightly tapered from the top, and is signed and titled on the underside. A second vase is attributed to Eberle, but is unsigned. It has a flared rim with a wide shoulder and applied strap handles to either side. It shows a partially shadowed nude figure to either side, in the same gestural style.

Eberle (American, 1944 -) has a long list of awards, fellowships and one-man shows to his credit, having been professor in the Ceramic Arts programs at Philadelphia College of Art and Carnegie-Mellon University. His work is held at the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Carnegie Museum of Art, and the Fine Art Museum of San Francisco among many others. His work has been profiled, reviewed and studied in many publications. For more on this contemporary ceramic artist, please see the link here.
