An oil painting on canvas mounted to board coastal landscape scene by John Hammerstad (Norwegian/American, 1842-1925). Sail ships appear in the distance sailing to the right of the scene. Waves crest and crash against a rocky coastline. Signed to the lower left. The work remains unframed.

John Hammerstad was born in Norway and studied at the drawing school of Johan Fredrick Eckersberg (1822-1870), a member of the late Romantic Dusseldorf school. Upon settling in Illinois, John found work painting landscape scenes for well to do Chicagoans.

- light scratches and wear to the canvas throughout.
