Large Semi-Antique Hand-Knotted Savonnerie-Style Area Rug

Item Details

A large semi-antique Savonnerie-style area rug. This wool rug is hand-knotted in a palette of cream, camel, terracotta, powder blue, sage, and cornsilk. It begins with a large oval medallion grounded in camel and filled with images of whirling and scrolling acanthus and leafy vines. The medallion rests on a cream-colored field with broken borders and floral cornucopiae morphing with furled acanthus. Elaborate acanthus continue in the main border amid roses of sharon and other florals. Selvedges are double overcast; ends are tucked under and stitched. The rug is unlabeled.
