Antique Victorian Quarter Swan Oak Carved Sideboard

Item Details

An antique Victorian quarter sawn oak carved sideboard, circa 1870-1900. This American sideboard is constructed from desirable quarter sawn oak with dramatic flecking. This sideboard has a carved pediment with cartouche, scallop shell, and acanthus leaves over the molded cornice supported by carved stylized lion heads and paws flanking a mirrored backboard that rests on the top of the sideboard. The rectangular top with moulded edges and rounded corners overhangs three aligned drawers with convex fronts, knapp or scallop-and-dowell joints, brass bail pulls on rosettes, and brass escutcheons. The center drawer is divided into two sections and lined with green baize for silverware storage. Below are two cabinet doors carved with an image of the North Wind flanked by acanthus leaves, which open with brass ring pulls to reveal a divided storage space, and one full-width convex drawer, all between two pilasters carved at the top and ending in lion’s paw feet. The chest is fitted with brass pulls, escutcheons and ring pulls. Mirrored backboard and sideboard can be disassembled for moving. Marked on the reverse in black paint or India ink A.H.J. Batesville Ark.
