An oil painting on canvas titled Sandstorm by Fremont Ellis (American, 1897-1985). Depicted is a woman with her herd of goats descending down a hillside as her dress seems to billow in the wind. A large rock formation stands far off in the distance and the hazy atmosphere suggests the possibility of a storm. Artist’s signature to lower left corner of piece with informative labels to verso. Presented without glass in a decorative gold painted wooden frame with wire hanger to verso.
Fremont Ellis was born in Virginia City, Montana and grew up without a formal education. He was a self-taught artist for the entirety of his life except for a three month period at the ASL in NYC. Ellis earned a reputation as a New Mexico painter of site-specific landscapes that conveyed his intense emotions for the rich coloration of the Southwest. Ellis was influenced by American Impressionism but was never considered a modern painter, tending towards a realistic style with his own uniquely tinted palette. He used a camera using different lenses to document sites and then used the color shifts to paint his work.
