A watercolor painting on paper titled Jalía – Armonía by listed American painter Charles De Wolf Brownell (1822 – 1909), dated 1860. The work depicts a birch tree coated in lichens and other organisms. To the upper left and right corners is the title, date, and other information. Presented in off-white matting under acrylic sheeting, without a frame. To the verso is a gallery label.

Brownell is most well-known for his landscapes of New England and international scenes. A contemporary and friend to Hudson River School artists like Frederic Edwin Church, Brownell’s works reveal a similar romantic sentiment for the natural world. Brownell was born in Providence, Rhode Island and was raised in East Hartford, Connecticut. He became a lawyer in New England but abandoned law in his early 30s for painting. His international scenes include Cuba, Mexico, South America, and more. During his lifetime, Brownell exhibited at the National Academy of Design and the Brooklyn Art Museum. Today, his works can be found in the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art (Hartford, CT), the Milwaukee Art Museum, and numerous private collections.
