An oil painting on canvas portrait of a reclining woman by Simmie Knox (American, b. 1935), executed in 1997. Depicted is a woman lying in a pleasant landscape scene in rich tones and highly realistic detail. Signed and dated to the lower right. Presented in an ornate, art nouveau style wood frame.
Simmie Knox is best known for his portraits of celebrities, most notably those of former US President Bill Clinton and his wife, Hilary. Mostly self taught as a kid, he received his BFA, magna cum laude, and his MFA in 1972 from the Tyler School of Art art Temple University in Philadelphia. His list of portraits of historical and celebrity figures includes Frederick Douglas (1975), Justice Thurgood Marshall (1989), Muhammad Ali (1995), and many more. He has exhibited at the Museum of African Art in Washington DC and in the 32nd Biennial of Contemporary American Painting at the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington.
