An American school oil painting on canvas of a double portrait of a mother and child, dated to the late 18th-century. The work depicts a woman in quarter-length with a child affectionately holding her shoulder. Their pale skin and light colored clothing is emphasized by the black background. Unsigned by the artist. Housed in a late 18th-century frame with black paint and brass-tone corner medallions.
Condition
- fair; areas of wear to the frame, concentrated along the corners; two corner medallions on the frame are missing; small insect holes along the sides of the frame; craquelure throughout the painting; the canvas has been backed with cardboard and it is indeterminable if the canvas has been relined or otherwise backed; overpainting to the woman’s left hand, forearm, hair, and dress; overpainting to the child’s neck and upper chest.
