William H. West Oil Painting on Board "A Home in the 1800"

Item Details

An oil painting on board titled A Home in the 1800 by folk artist William H. West (Pennsylvania, 1881-1975), executed in September of 1974. Two out of perspective figures appear in the lower center of the composition surrounded by their vast farm landscape and divided plots. Signed and dated to the lower right, inscribed to the verso. The work is presented in a plain wood frame.

William West was a jack of all trades, working as a farmer, building houses, milling, building cars, and painting folk art scenes. He gave up farming at any early age and didn’t start painting until 1965, just ten years before his death. Self taught, using whatever he could get his hands on, West’s style is charmingly primitive and reminiscent of Grandma Moses.
