Tiffin Poppy Vase

Item Details

A vintage amethyst Tiffin pressed glass vase acid etched to ‘Black Satin’, ornamented with poppies in relief, detailing hand-painted in deep rose and green. Circa 1920s. Original paper label with ‘TIFFIN’ over large ‘T’ is affixed to the exterior.

The A.J. Beatty & Sons glass factory relocated from Steubenville, to Tiffin, Ohio in 1888-89, then merged with the United States Glass Company in 1892. This vase was manufactured at “Factory R”, which after being destroyed by fire in 1893, was rebuilt and survived the Great Depression of the 1930s. Black satin, one of Tiffin’s most outstanding color introductions, is smooth with a semi-gloss satin finish created by etching the surface of the opaque glass in an acid bath. Black Satin pieces were frequently decorated with methods of hand painting, silver overlay or hand applied coralene.
