An antique Renaissance Revival secretary desk. This mid 19th century Northern European secrétaire à abattant with book cabinet is made of walnut and burl walnut veneer in the Renaissance Revival style which was popular in Europe and North America 1850-1880. The fold down front of the desk, which serves as the writing surface when down, is covered in green baize; with the interior fitted with three long drawers at the top and below them one large cubby hole with an arch of flame birch which is flanked on both sides by three small cubby holes, also flanked on both sides by three short drawers; with three long drawers at the bottom; all of the drawers having flame birch drawer fronts with walnut turned knobs. Above the fitted desk is one long drawer; and below are three long drawers, all with a raised molding bordering the edge of the drawer and two turned walnut knobs. The corners of the secretary are chamfered with applied walnut pilasters, with burl walnut escutcheons, at the top and bottom; with the entire case resting on a wide moulded plinth with moulded feet following curve of the corners. On top of the secretary desk is a moulded top which follows the shape of the case and the pilasters on the chamfered corners with the corniced book cabinet resting on top with two glazed doors and one adjustable shelf.
