A Yoshijiro Urushibara Mokuchu restrike woodblock print titled Horse, originally created circa 1930. This minimalist print depicts a horse grazing set against a golden brown background. A bright, white body with strong, black outlines and soft, gray strokes to depict the mane and tail. Upon closer inspection, the wood grain of the woodblock can be seen in the golden brown background. The artist’s seal 漆原木虫 (Mokuchu) is present in red ink to the lower left corner. The print is signed by the artist in pencil to the same corner, under the artist’s seal. The artwork is framed in a cream paper mat with a fan-shaped paper sticker with Japan printed on it. Written to the front of the mat paper in pencil is ‘13/3000’ to the lower right corner. A typed label under the artwork reads U 198, Color Print by Urushibara, Horse. He was born in 1887 and went England in his early age to study painting and remained there for nearly 40 years. He is noted as the painter of Horses.

Yoshijiro Urushibara (1888–1953) was a Japanese artist who took the name Mokuchu (漆原木虫) as his artist’s name. He worked at the British Museum as a young man accurately copying famous Chinese scroll paintings, his own work is influenced by English revival in color woodblock printing. Urushibara worked with other designers and artists on collaborative works, and later created his own works.

Condition

- some dark art spotting to the lower center, to right margin and throughout the mat; stains and discoloration throughout the artwork and matting; a rip to the lower left margin of the mat’s inner edge.
