An antique mid-19th-century wood engraving titled Ulysses The Giant Killer designed by well-listed and renowned German-American illustrator Thomas Nast (1840 – 1902) from the December 1865 issue of Harper’s Weekly. This Civil War era print depicts Santa Claus presiding over a holiday play featuring General Ulysses S. Grant playing the role of Jack in the Beanstalk. The oversize severed heads of Confederate leaders Robert E. Lee, John Bell Hood, and Richard Ewell rest at his feet. Other images in the composition show vignette scenes of traditional holiday celebrations. This work is signed in plate near the center of the composition and is presented under glass with layered off-white and red mats in a wood frame. There is a hanging wire mounted to the verso.
