A mixed media sculpture titled Ship of State w/ Bird of Prey by Maryland-based artist Frank Kowing (1944-2016). Depicted is an abstract sculpture made of found objects with splatters of blue,red and purple paint throughout. A tag with the title and date of creation of the work is attached. Presented with a hanging wire to verso. Accompanied by a descriptive catalog on the artist’s painting series Journey of Healing.
Frank Kowing is an outsider artist based in Maryland with a larger than life reputation, the bulk of his focus being mixed media works, many grand in scale and with three dimensional quality. He has participated in a vast array of group shows and exhibits since his first shows in the 1970s in New York City. His education, after service in Vietnam with the US Army, was extensive and included the Gerrit Rietveld Academy, Amsterdam, Netherlands and several fine art institutions in Pennsylvania.
